>My thrifty weekend trip

>It has been a rough few months for my husband and I. We’ve faced a lot of major life-decisions…a lot of which are ones with no easy answers. I’ve spent consistent 12 hour days at work, and have been stressed and grumpy when I get home. I also agreed to teach ESY (Extended School Year) for my students = no summer break for me this year 😦 With the combination of all of this…I said we just needed to find a weekend to get away. I knew we wouldn’t be able to go on vacation this summer, but I wanted to figure out a way to spend time together away from home.

SO – I used priceline.com for the first time ever. I used the “priceline negotiator” and put a bid in for $40/night in the Ocean City, MD region. You can also choose how many stars you’d like the hotel to be, and I chose 3/4 stars. When no one accepted my bid, I got an e-mail saying that a hotel matching my requirements would accept an offer of $50/night. So, I agreed, and was very excited to find out that it was the Courtyard Marriott hotel right on the beach! Yahoo!
(If you would book these rooms from the Marriott website…it would be at least $157 per night).
I was basically obsessed with the decor in the hotel room. I mean, for a hotel room?! It was great!

We’re so cheap…and we were staying there for less than 1/3 of the cost, and we didn’t want anyone to know about that 🙂 There was some fancy event going on the night we got there, so we felt so out of place in the lobby in our “road clothes” (it was close to a 4 hour drive with traffic) while everyone else walking in and out was in black tie wear. Oh well!
We had a balcony off of our room, and this was the view to the left of us:

However, directly in front of our balcony was this beautiful “Olympic Pool” from the hotel across the street (can you believe the sign actually advertises that?!)

We took about 5 walks in our short stay…it was cold!! The temp was a pleasant 55 degrees, but the wind was very strong…and coupled with the ocean air, we were pretty cold walking!

I “forgot” all about Weight Watchers for the weekend (in order to make it a true vacation) and I am now paying for this:

On Saturday night, we got dinner on the boardwalk, looking at the ocean, at this restaurant:I will honestly say, it was the BEST pizza we’ve ever had! My husband was especially impressed…we got a veggie pizza, and they forgot the sauce when they were making it (random) so they gave us the white veggie pizza, and then another veggies pizza (with sauce this time). We may or may not have almost finished those two. That sounds worse now than it felt at the time. I told you I’m paying for it now!!

Here’s some more snapshots:

Off-season boardwalk = amazing

classy wine in hotel cups…because we’re too cheap to get alcohol at a restaurant 🙂

So, all in all, we had a GREAT weekend. It was totally worth it to get away and spend some time relaxing with each other, and making new memories together. We totally wished we could’ve taken Buckley with us, but he had such a fun time staying with my parents and their two pugs 🙂 Now, it’s back to reality. *sigh*

I hope I encouraged you to look for an affordable “vacation” for your family! Have you done something similar?

Note: None of the companies referenced in this post have any idea I wrote this. I just had a great experience, and I think people need to know about it! 🙂

    >Good for you making the time to get away and have time together! Sounds like a fantastic deal you got! I wonder if the website has a branch in Australia? We often take the kids away camping just for a night to get away – they love it and I have such fond memories of camping as a kid! Much harder work as parents than kids though – a cheap hotel for a night sounds good!! :)Thanks for linking to a Round Tuit!Hope you have a great week!Jill @ Creating my way to Successhttp://www.jembellish.blogspot.com/

  4. >Good for you! Even if it's just for a weekend, I think it's so important to spend alone, quality time with each other away from the hustle and bustle of "real" life. And to get it for an awesome deal??? Bonus!!!

  16. >My fiance and I did something similar a few months back. I decided I wanted to get away for the weekend but seeing as how it was last minute we knew we had to stay close by. We found a hotel in RI(we live in MA) that had a Suite fairly cheap. It wasn't much more than a normal room and I thought we could make it that much nicer by getting a suite. We had so much fun. We got a gift certificate off restaurant.com and went to this quaint little italian place, so adorable. We brought some candles, a pitcher for water, and some fun bath stuff, to make the hotel feel more like a spa. It was a great experience and seeing how much you paid for your hotel I may just have to try something similar.
