>Making art out of a cabinet door

>I’m so happy to be back after a few days of Christmas craziness. I was VERY busy crafting up until literally the last minutes, and now I can finally share the projects I have been working on with you! Just because I gave these as Christmas presents doesn’t mean they’re strictly for Christmas…so I thought you’d enjoy seeing them now ๐Ÿ™‚

Today, I’ll show you how I made art for my parents out of an old cabinet door:

Here’s a few snapshots of the progression:

I got the door for $3 from Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore. After reading this post, I HIGHLY suggest that you look up your local ReStore. I had been meaning to go for a while, but this was the first time…and I want to go everyday! Recycling at it’s finest ๐Ÿ™‚

Ok, then I sanded it down & stained it with the dark walnut stain leftover from our kitchen table project. I gave it about 3 coats of wipe-on poly.

Then I used one of my favorite things (Mod-podge) to apply the pictures to the door. Now, these pictures are special, because they were all taken at my family’s lake cabin. My parents were looking for something to hang on their big blank wall in the cabin, so that’s why I even made this in the first place!

So I had these gaps on the sides of the pictures…I decided to go to Home Depot to find some trim to fit. I found this:

I painted it a cream color that I had in my closet, and then glazed it to give it some more interest. I then used Gorilla Glue to attach them to the sides of the pictures
I was not careful enough, and some of the Gorilla Glue expanded out onto my picture. So, to cover it up, I put a gray ribbon on the sides of the trim
We put picture wire on the back, and it was finished!

I am happy to report that my parents genuinely liked it, and are excited to get up to the cabin so they can hang it! The rustic feel of this will fit right in at the cabin ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ll post a picture once it goes up!

Let me know your thoughts! Hope you all had a GREAT Christmas!

  4. >I love it, Christina! The cabinet door you started with was terrific by itself, and with those wonderful old hinges, even more so. And your finishing touches were perfect! I'm sure your parents did love it. ;)Thanks for linking to my party. I look forward to seeing what you link up each week.Liz @ the Brambleberry Cottagehttp://thebrambleberrycottage.blogspot.com
